WFTDA playoffs work differently this year. Instead of a regional playoff system, teams are seeded in tournaments without regard to geography. This was supposedly a boon for teams like Rose City or Denver or Rat City, which might have been one of the twelve best teams in the WFTDA in recent years, but were often squeezed out of participation in Championships due to the awesome nature of the former Western region.
One result of this change, however, has been some somewhat-annoyed chatter around the internet water cooler, about the travel this new playoff system requires from the teams and fans. Anecdotally, I hear that a lot of fans are deciding not to travel to these far-flung locations because of the cost. True, many of these people are Rose City fans who were holding out hope that we’d be playing 40 minutes down the freeway.
Me? I wouldn’t be able to go anyway, because I’m having a damn baby, but I am not likely to spend my hard-earned money on a trip to Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Sorry. I had a lovely day of scrimmaging in Ft. Wayne when I lived in Indiana! I’ve flown to Sacramento for regionals (oh did I), and to Denver and Atlanta for Championships. I wouldn’t have gone to Atlanta if not for the side trip.
So, let’s hear from you. Are you planning on traveling as a spectator this tournament season? Why or why not?
