Welcome to the inaugural Frisky Power Rankings, where I rank women’s flat track roller derby according to my whims/in-depth knowledge.
- Gotham. Shut up, Gotham, we already know.
- Rose City Wheels of Justice. The teenagers are looking really good. (That came out wrong.)
- Rose City Break Neck Betties, but only when I bench coach them by accident at scrimmage. Then they beat the High Rollers by 99 points. It must be my winning aura.
- Bay Area Derby. They got a bunch of people who’re good at roller skating. I keep remembering that and getting worried, then remembering the new playoff structure and relaxing again.
- Denver’s helmets. First in Glitter, Not First in The West or Championships, but Still Pretty Good. Also: Francey Pants.
- Windy City and Minnesota. They’re tied.
- London. They win for coming to the west coast so I can see them in person. Thanks London.
- VRDL. Samesies!
- The internet. This is the internet’s year for roller derby, I can feel it. WFTDA.tv! Non-crappy production from other leagues! GIF mania!
- Philly. They’re always pretty good. Get another V-Diva this year and you’re headed up to Break Neck Betties territory.
- Montreal. They’re Montreal, and Montreal = fantastic and fun. I feel like I didn’t even need to type that.
- Rat City. Oh, Seattle, you think you’re so great? You’re a little more dreary and cold than Portland! I don’t want to spend two days there when I can eat in restaurants here!
- Some team I never think of as very good that’s going to surprise people early on. You heard it here first.
- Texas. Call me again in tournament season. How do you guys do that? Getting really good in September-November? Does Belle Starr know?
- Oly. Who knows who’s on their team, and what games they’re playing? I asked, but they never tweet or email me back.
Not listed: Denver’s shorts.
What do you think?
