Hey guys! We’ve sold enough t-shirts since my last donation to the Save the Manatee Club to adopt a manatee! Who would you like to adopt, blog readers? The following four are living in, or sometimes live in, Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, which I visited last November. One of these ladies we adopt could be the first manatee I ever saw in Florida…which is this one, here.
So, who will it be?
From the Save the Manatee site:
ARIEL was just two weeks old when she was rescued with her mom Amanda. She is a regular at the manatee education programs, lifting her head out of the water to “smile” at the visitors.
BETSY was named after Betsy Dearth, who was a ranger at the park. Betsy the manatee is very friendly and curious and is quick to investigate anything new. Ranger Dearth called her “the inspector.”
LORELEI has been living at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park since 1994. She is very gentle and is often seen resting with the other manatees. However, she also likes to “work out” on occasion — swimming from one end of the spring to the other.
ROSIE has been in captivity since 1968 and is described as the “matriarch” of the springs by park staff. She is known to be very gentle, and she often looks after the younger manatees at the park.

Money for adopted manatees all goes into one big pot of operation costs for the Save the Manatee Club, but we’ll get periodic updates on “our” manatee.
Vote away!
I love Betsy, but then that’s probably because my manfriend adopted her for me for Valentines Day this year. Best ever.
