Sooo…you guys heard about this fantasy roller derby? Sorry, you can’t join. It’s exclusive.
Sorry to be a jerk, but we just needed to get that out of the way first.
A couple of weeks ago, Mike Chexx (who you may know as an announcer) casually mentioned on Facebook that he was thinking about starting a “beta test” fantasy roller derby league, and by the way, would anyone be interested in that? Luckily, I happened to see it right away. Within ten minutes or so, he filled all the slots he’d been planning on, doubled the size, and filled those, too, with plenty of people left out.
So! We have two leagues, and two divisions within each league. Players have teams of eight Rose City Rollers skaters, and can roster one “jammer” and four “blockers” for each bout weekend. Jammer fantasy points are based on…jammer points. Blocker fantasy points are based on +/-, or the number of points scored for and against the blocker’s team while that blocker is in a lineup.
I won’t get into the details because they’re so detail-y and this is really just a test, and we’re tweaking things as needed. Will trades be allowed? Free agents? How do non-skaters get injury reports?
It’s all very roller derby, in that we’re discussing every little point in a democratic way, for better or worse. But hey, if we weren’t into geeking out over these details, we wouldn’t have jumped at the chance for fantasy derby, right?
Someday, we’ll have more reliable action stats, and that will make for a more well-rounded game. Blocker stats are difficult – you can have terrible stats because you’re on the track during a 4-1 pack disadvantage and a power jam. Strong blockers are put into tough situations.
Has anyone out there played little games of fantasy derby? Does your league have reliable stats? Are you totally jealous?
