In olden times*, we had the twoevils registry for roller derby names, and it worked just fine. You’d think of a name, look it up to see if anyone already had it, swear a little when you found out that it, yes, someone did have Ophelia Pain (sigh), then go back to the drawing board. Then your team submitted your name, it was added to the list, and there you had it. You were an Official Certified Rollerperson.
Then, a few years later, the twoevils registry had been outgrown by roller derby. If you wanted to register a name, it took months to get it approved. By that time, someone who had submitted the same name six months prior may have already “taken” the name that you had been using, and you had to go back to the drawing board, tell everyone you had a new name, etc. Exhausting.
Now, there’s a brand-new shiny roller derby name website which – gasp – allows duplicate names. If someone else wants to be Frisky Sour, so be it. I can’t even register my name, I suppose, unless I start skating again. (It’s going to happen, really.)
What do you think of duplicate roller derby names? Would you mind if someone started using the same roller derby name as you? Is this just a necessary step in the growth of roller derby? Or are you over roller derby names all together?
Personally, I would be mildly bummed if someone used Frisky Sour, but that’s not a compelling argument against duplicate names. I wrote a book under that name, sure, but I have no claim to it.
