And they’re baaack! Since Rose City passed a new Returning Skater Policy, three people have returned to home team rosters: Napalm Beth and Sully Skullkicker joined the High Rollers after being travel team only last year, and Megahurtz came back to the Break Neck Betties after a couple of years of civilian life. You could say that Hurtz is returning from being travel team only as well, since she was TT-only in 2009. You could also say that Hurtz is still a really good skater and loves unicorns, because both of those things are true.
Rose City fans, I think you’ll see a few more returning skaters go to team rosters before we’re done, but this might be it for those who can skate in the season opener on January 21st. Returning skaters have to jump through a couple of low-hanging hoops, including waiting 30 days to bout after they return to rosters.
Newsblast: there will be a special draft on December 29th. Returning skaters are considered to be “pre-drafted,” so the Betties have taken their first round pick, and the High Rollers have used their first two. Though the Heathers requested the draft, all teams can participate. GNR will be first to pick, per last season’s year-end rankings.
The Heathers asked for a draft because they only have 16 skaters, and there’s a very good chance White Flight and Mercy will go travel-team only after tryouts. Whitey and Mercy won’t be in the opener. Sorry, Cadavers.
Since this is my blog and not the RCR blog, I can give my opinion on the special draft…
…but I won’t except to say that I hope lots of hard-working Fresh Meat get picked up. There are quite a few who deserve a shot.
This season is shaping up to be pretty interesting.

How long until we see five or six home teams?
Good question! Last year a committee comissioned by the RCR Board (wow, sounds official) discussed whether we would want a fifth team, and I think the answer was yes. Now we have to figure out how to do it – how to draft to make the new team competitive, when they’re going to practice, etc. We have the largest WFTDA league, with a lot of programs competing for floor time.
It’s possible that a fifth team could debut next season, but not certain.
There must be a contest of some sort to pick the new team name.
So much yay in one post: Sully, Beth, Megahurtz. The Hurtz/Checkya double-whammy returns! That great maniacal look Hurtz gets when she’s going after somebody.
And sure, I’ll be sad if Whitey and Mercy are no longer Heathers, but I’ll still get to watch them on TT.
p.s. – Thanks for the link to the dormant Heathers blog. Maybe that’s enough of a kick in the ass to get me to pick it up again.
